Packing materials for moving a computer ?
If you’re planning to pack and move the computer without the help of movers, you’ll need quite a few supplies. Here are several packing materials you need to have for packing your computer.
1.Packing tape
2.A laptop bag (if moving a laptop)
3.Moving blankets
3.Foam sheets, packing paper or some other type of protective covering
4.Plastic baggies for parts and cords
5.Twist-ties for cords
6.Flat panel TV box for monitor
7.Cardboard moving box
Ways to move a desktop computer
Desktop computers are much trickier than laptops to move, simply because of the many components involved. Before packing up your desktop computer, make sure to back up your hard drive on a flash drive. This way, if the computer is damaged, you won’t lose important information on your device.
Here are a few step to safe prepare your desktop computer for relocation.
- First, make sure your computer is powered down and all cables have been disconnected from the power suplly. The desktop computer should never be on while moving.
- As you disconnect all cables and cords, be sure to secure them with a twist-tie and place them in a labeled plastic baggie. Consider labeling each cord separately, so that you know exactly where the cord goes when reassembling.
- Find a cardboard box large enough to hold your computer. If you happen to still have the computer’s original box, we recommend reusing this for the move. Tape the bottom and sides of the box with packing tape.
- Wrap and surround the computer tower with foam or some sort of protective covering.
- Gently place the computer tower inside the box. If there is room, we recommend surrounding the computer with a moving blanket, packing paper or some other protective material to serve as a bumper so that any bad break will be avoid.
- Take the computer’s monitor and wrap it in a protective covering (foam, a moving blanket or packing paper). Secure the protective covering with tape. If the monitor fits inside the original computer box, we recommend placing it inside with the computer tower. If you need a separate box for the monitor, try using a telescope box. These flat boxes are specifically designed to hold TVs, computer monitors and other flat objects.
- Wrap your computer mouse, keyboard and other accessories in foam wrap or another type of protective covering. Place these accessories either in the same box as the computer tower or a smaller, separate box.
- Once everything is packed away, secure all boxes with packing tape. Label each box and make sure to signal “this side up” on the box. This will help prevent unnecessary damage to your computer tower, and other accessories.
Ways to move a laptop computer
Instead of packing your laptop computer, it may be easier to carry it in a laptop bag or backpack specifically designed to hold portable electronic devices. However, if you prefer not to travel with your laptop and would rather ship it with your other belongings, follow the next steps.
- First, gather all of your laptop supplies in one place. This include the laptop charger, headphones and adapter. Unfortunately, when moving it’s all too easy to lose these small but important components. Keeping them in one place will ensure they don’t go missing during the move.
- Power down your laptop and make sure everything is turned off.
- If you have a laptop sleeve, we recommend placing the device inside. Zip it securely and put the sleeve inside of a cardboard box. If you do not have a sleeve, wrap the laptop in protective covering such as foam wrap or a moving blanket. Secure it with tape.
- When placing the laptop inside of a cardboard box, be sure to position it on its edge.
- Wrap accessories in a protective covering and secure with tape. Once they are protected, place them inside the box with the laptop. Fill in the open gaps with foam peanuts, packing paper or a moving blanket.
- Tape and secure the moving box shut. Label the box clearly with “this side up” on the box. Make sure to tell the movers to handle any boxes containing electronic devices with extra care.
Guide for helping your move!
- Gather all product manuals and place them in a safe, secure bag. That way if you need instructions for putting your computer back together, you’ll have the manual on-hand for all assembly and maintenance tips.
- Label all cords. When placing a twist tie on the cords, label each bundle with its corresponding electronic device. You can also place cords inside plastic baggies and label each bag according to its corresponding computer.
- If storing a computer in a storage unit before, during or after a move, consider renting a climate-controlled storage unit. Electronics are sensitive to overheating and will need to be kept in cool environments during the move.
- Create a moving inventory list of all valuables including your computer and other electronics. If hiring a moving company, take photos of your computer beforehand. These photos could come in handy if the computer is damaged while in transit, and you need to file a claim with your insurance company.
- If hiring a moving company, be sure to ask about their valuation coverage options. All movers will offer a basic Released Value Protection option to their customers. To increase your coverage, ask the moving company about their more comprehensive plans. You may also want to consider purchasing additional moving insurance from a third-party insurance company to be more secure during your move.
- Use original packaging when possible. If you happen to have your computer’s original box, simply reuse it to move the device. These boxes are designed to meet the specific needs of your computer and therefore they are ideal for moving and relocation.
- Remember to always back up your hard drive before moving a computer. Unfortunately, damage can and does happen when moving – even when all preventable measures have been taken. So it’s important to back up your information just in case something happens to your computer or laptop while its moving.
- When loading boxes into a truck rental, be sure to use tie downs to hold boxes in place. This will prevent your computer from shifting while the car is on the road. If you plan to bring the box with you in your personal vehicle, secure the box by using a seatbelt or rope.
